A BRIEF ABOUT AMERICA'S CUP CHALLENGE

We are in early summer of 1851. The yacht named America sailed across the Atlantic to race against the best of the British fleet. In a race around the Isle of Wight on August 22, 1851, the America won the challenge over 14 British boats. The legend of the America’s Cup was born.

Say, signal-master, are the yachts in sight? This is the question Queen Victoria posed as she observed the race around the Isle of Wight from the Royal Yacht.

The J-Class boats were introduced in 1930, at the last participation of Sir Thomas Lipton in the America’s Cup, at the age of 82. The Irish/Scottish tea baron challenged five times between 1899 and 1930. While Lipton didn't win the America's Cup, he became one of the first to introduce the idea of sports sponsorship, and he realized a financial windfall from it.
